What Is a Pack Goat? Meet Your New Favorite Trail Companion

Discover why these remarkable animals make such capable outdoor companions.

When most people think of goats, they picture farm animals grazing in a pasture or climbing on anything they can find.

But goats have another fascinating talent: carrying supplies on outdoor adventures!

Pack goats have accompanied people through challenging terrain for generations, and today they're finding new fans among hikers, backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Built for the Trail

Goats are naturally agile, curious and sure-footed.

Their ability to navigate rocky terrain, climb obstacles and maintain their balance makes them well suited to many mountain environments.

With appropriate training and conditioning, pack goats can learn to carry specialized equipment and accompany people on hiking adventures.

How Much Can a Pack Goat Carry?

A healthy, fully grown and well-conditioned pack goat may carry up to approximately 25% of its body weight, including its saddle, panniers and gear.

For example, a 200-pound goat may be capable of carrying a total load of up to 50 pounds.

However, carrying capacity depends on the goat's maturity, fitness, conditioning, terrain and weather conditions.

Responsible packing always comes first.

Training Begins With Trust

A good pack goat doesn't become a reliable trail companion overnight.

Training involves patience, positive reinforcement and gradually introducing new experiences.

Goats learn to navigate obstacles, cross different surfaces, become comfortable with equipment and develop confidence around their human companions.

The goal isn't simply to teach skills. It's to build a trusting partnership.

More Than Animals That Carry Gear

Ask anyone who spends time with pack goats, and they'll tell you that every goat has its own personality.

Some are bold explorers. Others are thoughtful observers. And some are always looking for their next snack!

That individuality is part of what makes working with pack goats such a rewarding experience.
